Old Gold Standard
128 seasons of Purdue men's basketball, 1896-97 to 2024-25: every team measured against the field it actually played, every player against the team he carried, every coach by the same yardstick. Built from Purdue's own record book and every Division I result since 1985.
The short version
- The 2023-24 team is the best Purdue team on record by both measures. It rates 2.53 standard deviations above the Division I field, second in the country that season, and its era-weighted accomplishment score (73.4) edges Rick Mount's 1969 national runner-up. The 1988 team is second by strength since 1985, ahead of 1994.
- Before 1985 the greatest teams were Ward Lambert's. On the conference-only measure, 1933-34 leads, then 1911-12, 1919-20, Mount's 1968-69, and 1929-30. That measure is coarse, and the site says so, but it agrees with the full ratings at 0.85 in the forty-one seasons where both exist.
- Zach Edey's 2024 is the best player season since 1952, and Joe Barry Carroll's is the best career under the headline lens, share of production on a team judged by its schedule. Terry Dischinger, Mount, and Carroll fill out the peak list; Glenn Robinson's 1994 is sixth. The team-strength adjustment matters: Edey ranks #15 on raw share and first once the strength of the 2024 team is counted.
- Painter and Keady, on identical footing since 1985: Painter 471-215 (68.7%), Keady 430-229 (65.2%); Big Ten 64.8% to 60.2%; NCAA wins 24 to 18; Final Fours 1 to 0; average team strength 1.59 to 1.42. Their teams' average rank in the field is the same, about 33. The author is Painter's second cousin. The yardsticks are the same for everyone, and the reader can check every one.
- March has been Purdue's problem under both men. By seed, Keady's tournament teams were expected to win about 25 games and won 18; Painter's were expected to win about 26 and won 24. Against our own ratings rather than seeds, both gaps shrink to under two games, which says the seeds flattered Purdue more than Purdue failed them.
- Among all Big Ten coaches since 1985 (65 with two or more seasons), Painter ranks #8 on winning, #10 on team strength, and #13 on results beyond strength; Keady #17, #23, and #14. Tom Izzo leads the beyond-strength ledger. The Big Ten coaches page has all three.
- The ratings check out. Across all twenty Painter seasons, our rank for Purdue agrees with the KenPom rank printed in Purdue's own media guide with a rank correlation of 0.98.

The strength rating fits every Division I game of a season at once, regular season and postseason, so each opponent is judged by how its whole season went. It is standardized within the season, so a 2.5 in 2024 and a 2.25 in 1988 mean the same thing: that far above that year's field. The teams page has every season, the pre-1985 measure, and the most impressive wins and worst losses.

Accomplishment counts what a team won, weighted by how hard it was that year: a Big Ten title was worth more before the conference tournament and more still before at-large bids, and an NCAA bid is scaled by how selective the field was. The weights are a judgment call and are published, with a sentence of reasoning per row, on the methodology page.

Records, titles, and tournament results for every Purdue coach, with strength and accomplishment where the data supports them. Keady's first four seasons fall before the full-field data begins and are shown in the coarse tier. The coaches page has the Keady-versus-Painter table, tournament results against seed and against rating, and the crude "results above roster" measure with its caveats.
Where to go from here
The What It Means page tells the story without tables. The players page has the three lenses on greatness and the players from before the box score. Every season since 1896-97 has its own page with every game and every player line. Everything is downloadable from the data page.
